Irvine Asics Employees and UC Ag Research Center: Providing Food for the Body and Soul
“As part of their Earth Day celebrations, each year the team at Asics corporate headquarters takes the short drive to South Coast REC to harvest produce, most of which will be donated to community groups here in the county. Asics team members were also treated to a talk and tour of Lindsey Pedroncelli’s (@theplantpathologist) strawberry research plot, where they also got to pick strawberries to take home.”

Asics, based in Irvine at 80 Technology Dr., is a Japanese multinational corporation that produces sports equipment for a wide range of sports. The name is an acronym for the Latin phrase anima sana in corpore sano, The translation is “Healthy soul in a healthy body”.
South Coast Research and Extension Center (South Coast REC)
The South Coast Research and Extension Center (South Coast REC), located at 7601 Irvine Boulevard in Irvine, is one of nine University of California Agricultural Research and Extension Centers (RECs). In 1956, the University of California established the South Coast REC as a living agricultural and horticultural laboratory for our climate zone. This climate zone is called the California south coastal plain-temperate climatic zone.
This outdoor research laboratory is also headquarters to the Orange County Farm Bureau and UC Cooperative Extension programs, such as the Master Food Preservers, Master Gardeners, 4-H Youth Development, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). In addition, this site is home to research and extension programs addressing Human Wildlife Interactions, Urban Forestry, Water Resources, and Nutrition/Family & Consumer Services.
