UC Irvine Medical Campus Public Hearing – Monday, 10/19

UCI is moving forward with their plan to build an integrated medical complex providing inpatient, ambulatory, and emergency care services. The 14.5 acre campus site is adjacent to the Irvine Business Complex. It’s bound by Campus Drive and Jamboree Road, and will be next to the San Joaquin Marsh Reserve. Primary vehicular access to the medical complex will be from Jamboree Road at Birch Street. You can read more about this new medical complex in UCI News.
The University of California Board of Regents approved funding and construction for the $221 million facility back in March 2020. The University of California as a state agency is constitutionally exempt from local land use control. This means that the Irvine Planning Commission does not have the jurisdiction to evaluate, reject, or approve a campus’s long range development plan or a specific capital project. However, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requires an Environmental Impact Report (EIR), as well as public notification and public participation in the environmental review process.
