End of the Roll Call? Council to Decide on Simultaneous Electronic Voting
The Irvine City Council is set to vote tonight on changing how its elected members cast their votes on the dais. The vote will take place during Council Business as agenda item 7.2. See agenda.
Currently, the Irvine City Council uses sequential voting through a traditional roll call vote. Under this system, council members hear each preceding vote and can change their minds before their turn to cast a ballot and it gives an advantage to the Mayor who always votes last. Under the proposed simultaneous digital system, each member would vote electronically at the same time without knowing how their colleagues voted until all submissions are final.
The Community & Library Services, Transportation, and Planning Commissions already utilize simultaneous electronic voting.
According to the staff report, the current sequential system conflicts with recommendations made by the City Council Policies and Procedures Review Subcommittee on August 11, 2026. The subcommittee recommended adopting electronic voting lights, a measure the full City Council later approved unanimously. Councilmembers Kathleen Treseder, William Go, and Betty Martinez-Franco serve on the subcommittee.
