Calling on Parents to Step Up: Keeping Irvine Safe Starts With Smarter Bike Choices by Lydia Berube

Over the past few years, e-bikes have become very popular in Irvine. Many kids and teens ride them to school, parks, stores, and their friends’ houses. A lot of people think e-bikes are fun and easy to use. Even though e-bikes can be helpful, they can also be dangerous. Many kids ride too fast or do not follow safety rules. Because of this, more people in our community are becoming worried. Laws and rules alone are not enough to fix the problem. Parents need to step up and help children make smarter choices. One smart choice is using traditional bikes more often instead of e-bikes.

One reason e-bikes are dangerous is because they can go very fast. Some e-bikes can go almost 30 miles per hour. That is much faster than a normal bike. Many children are not ready to control a bike going that fast. Some riders speed through stop signs, cross streets without looking, or ride too close to cars and people walking. This can easily cause accidents.

Imagine you are driving peacefully through an intersection. Suddenly, an e bike races in front of your car. You would probably feel scared and slam on your brakes. A person walking nearby could also get hurt. Situations like this are happening more often in neighborhoods around Orange County. People should feel safe when they are walking, driving, or riding bikes in their community.

Sadly, some terrible accidents involving e-bikes have already happened. In nearby Lake Forest, a teacher and military veteran lost his life after being hit by a child riding an e bike. Stories like this show that e bike accidents are a serious problem. One careless choice can change lives forever. Families and communities can be deeply hurt by these accidents.

Another problem is that some kids treat e-bikes like toys instead of real vehicles. Some race each other near schools or try dangerous tricks. Others ride while looking at their phones or wearing headphones. Some children think accidents will never happen to them. But accidents can happen very quickly. Kids are still learning how to make good decisions, which is why parents need to guide them and teach them about safety.

Even though there are rules for e-bikes, rules alone are not enough. Police officers cannot watch every street or sidewalk all the time. Some riders still ignore speed limits, helmet rules, and traffic signals. This is why parents need to do more. Parents should make sure their children wear helmets, follow traffic laws, and ride carefully. They should also think about whether their child is responsible enough to ride an e bike safely or it is better for their child to have a regular bike. They need to ask themselves “Is e bike really better than regular bike for kids?”.

Traditional bikes can be a much better choice for many kids. Regular bikes move slower, which makes them safer. Riders have more time to stop or avoid accidents. Traditional bikes are also healthier because they give children exercise. Today, many kids spend too much time indoors on phones, tablets, or video games. This can lead to childhood obesity and other health problems like low energy, poor fitness, and unhealthy habits that can continue as they grow older. Riding a regular bike helps children stay active, build stronger muscles, improve heart health, and develop better daily routines. It also encourages them to spend more time outside with friends, which is good for both their body and mind.

E-bikes do not give as much exercise because the motor does most of the work. Many kids barely pedal at all. With traditional bikes, children use their muscles and get physical activity while having fun outdoors. Choosing regular bikes more often can help children stay healthy and also make the community safer.

Irvine is known for being a safe and family friendly city. Families move here because they want a good place for their children to grow up. But if dangerous e bike behavior continues, our community may not feel as safe anymore. People should not have to worry about getting hit by a speeding e bike while walking or driving.

In conclusion, e-bikes may seem fun and convenient, but they can also create serious safety and health problems. Fast speeds, reckless riding, accidents, and health concerns like childhood obesity are becoming bigger issues in communities like Irvine. Laws and rules are important, but they cannot solve everything.

Parents need to step up and help children make safer choices. Encouraging kids to ride traditional bikes more often can help prevent accidents, improve health, and build better habits. By working together, families can help keep Irvine safe, healthy, and family friendly for everyone.
